Late Call Proves Tough for JCW Racing at Port Royal Speedway
JCW Racing returned home to Port Royal Speedway Saturday night, eager to compete with the 305 RaceSaver Winged Sprints in the PA Sprint Series at the famed dirt half-mile.
With a large field of 31 cars entered for the track’s Salute to the Military Night, team owner and driver Jake Waters kicked off the night by pulling pill 33, lining him up 5th in the second of four heats. Waters felt the car was better than the heat race finish of 5th, with reporting the sprint trying to break loose in the middle of the turns and not allowing it to stick on top when trying to run different lines.
After the crew made needed adjustments to transition Waters to the feature, he lined the No. 10 machine up 18th for the feature race. With the green flag dropping, Waters felt he had a better start to the feature than previous, moving up to 11th before hitting turn 1. Approaching turn 3, Waters broke loose and spun out.
Restarting the race in 22nd after the spin, Waters maneuvered up to 12th, and was up to 10th after completing lap one. Waters still had a tough time in the sprint, feeling as if the car would “not drive off turns and lose time.” Because of the tough conditions, JCW Racing fell to 14th. As the feature came to a close, a late caution caused the field to slow. As the green flag approached, Waters was called back due for jumping the restart, per officials, and restarted 22nd. Waters was able to move up substantially in a handful of laps, scoring 14th at the checkered flag.
"We proved our car has a lot of speed, but we were having some difficulty getting the drive we need out of the turns and anywhere off the bottom. We have some work to do to get better, but have a good idea of what we can to do get where we need to go. The penalty late in the race was unfortunate, but we need to get the car better rather than worrying about it." – Jake Waters
After Saturday night’s race at Port Royal Speedway, JCW Racing and Waters currently sit 6th in points. Waters and the team will return to Hesston Speedway this Saturday, August 8, competing with the Lauren Highland Sprint Series in ‘Revenge of the Winged Warriors.’ Action heats up at the “Motor Mountain” beginning at 7:00 p.m.
