Prior to the start of Saturday’s event at the team’s home track Port Royal Speedway, team owner and driver Jake Waters looked for a good pill draw, potentially putting him in position to start in prime position for the heat race. Waters did just that by pulling pill no. 8, lining the driver up to start Heat 1 in 2nd position with the River Valley Builders 305 Sprints.
Beginning the PA Sprint Series (PASS) heat, Waters was able to get a jump on the field at the start, leading the first three laps of the race. The driver felt he wasn’t “aggressive” as he should have been, conserving the car for the remaining feature race by settling for second in the heat.
As the night raced on, Waters reported the track “really came to us throughout the evening,” and felt the car was great throughout the heat race. The driver noted that he “hardly had to work to achieve the position,” as the team had prepared the no. 10 RaceSaver winged sprint well for the evening.
After analyzing track changes throughout the event and consulting the team, JCW Racing chose to change very little on the car prior to the feature, even running the same set of Hoosier tires from the heat race.
Starting the feature in 4th position, Waters was able to make a three-wide pass for third, moving up to second by lap 2. After making a slight mistake entering turn three causing slight loss in position, the red flag flew after an on-track incident, halting the field. After losing an additional spot in track position from slight wheel spin exiting turn 4, Waters and the team were able to hang on to record another Top 5 finish, crossing the line in 5th position.
“Had it not been for the mistake in turn 3, I feel we had an easy Top 3 car, even with me fighting a cold. This was one of the best cars we’ve had all season at Port Royal Speedway, and this gives us great momentum for our next few races and the Blue Collar Classic in October.” – Jake Waters
JCW Racing will take a brief break from racing this weekend, returning to Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, September 4, competing with the PA Sprint Series once again at the famed ½ mile dirt track in Mechanicsburg, PA.
